I recently talked with my oldest sister, Ruthanne, and told her “I want to get into photography, where do I start.” Boy, oh boy, what a question. My sister has been an amateur photographer for many years and a professional photographer for less years and I could tell she was itching to impart all she had learned in a few minutes over the phone. Wouldn’t that be cool if it were possible! Alas, we are humans not hard drives, and this stuff takes time.
She offered me two pieces of advice:
1. Go with the skill and equipment and you already have, because all you need to get started is a camera (phone).”
2. Shoot …, a lot. It’s not like you’re spending $$$’s on film rolls so you might as well.”

So I got started and here are my favorites from one-two weeks ago.

Ruthanne offered to let me borrow one of her fancy cameras the next time I was in town. Well, we were just in town a few days ago and I took her up on her offer. We got back a few days ago and while I have taken a few shots from around our house, I’ve really been waiting for a clear night to get some shots with the night sky. Here are a few that I’m glad to share.

I forgot to take notes on the exact ISO, shutter speed, and aperture size on each of these but I have a general idea of what I used in each image so the values listed are my best guess at recalling.
Unfortunately, my favorite shot got photobombed by a passing airplane, leaving a streak that looks like a scratch. I’ve shared it here anyway because I still like the result.

30 sec, f/1.4, ISO100
I will be striving to upload here daily. How long I can keep that up who knows but, for now, that is the plan.
