Magnificent and innumerable are the lights that shine faithfully upon this earth. Even more magnificent and innumerable are the blessings bestowed upon us by our beloved Creator.
As I looked up this evening and admired the night sky, I reflected back on the past year. So many things didn’t go according to plan (our plans) but through the whole thing with all the ups and downs, God was faithful. And this year, we were blessed in more ways than I could have imagined looking forward from last March.
It certainly wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows (indeed clear skies were rare, especially at night). We experienced a significant amount of despair, uncertainties, anxiety about those uncertainties, setbacks, and loneliness, among other things. But we also gained strength and resilience. We have spent more time together as a family than we ever had in times past.
It was just a few years ago that I remember coming home one day after work and seeing my kids for less than an hour before they went off to bed. After a couple of such days within the span of a few weeks I decided that something had to change. This was not an acceptable normal for me. I was reminded of a line from the movie Hook where Moira warns her husband Peter that “we [as parents] have a few special years with our children, just a few years, then it’s over. And you, [Peter], are not being careful.”
We are preparing to build our homestead, a place that we hope to call our forever home. While I cannot know the future for certain, compared to a year ago, I believe that we have a much better idea of what that future will look like for us as a family. It is a bright and beautiful one, much like tonight’s sky.
