“Silence is golden. Get rich.”

Storytime.

In all four years of high school, I took Spanish as a foreign language. It was required by the district curriculum that all students take at least 3 years of a foreign language, but I decided to take an extra year because there were few other electives available, and I didn’t want to take the ones that were.

My 12th grade Spanish teacher was my favorite of all the teachers in the foreign language department. She had a quirky personality, commanded her classroom well, treated all her students with respect. While I can’t remember her name, I remember that she was blind in her left eye, and she had a handful of fantastic one-liners. Her best and most memorable phrase was “Silence is golden. Get rich.” Now, this was high school so, naturally, asking the class to stop talking was a fairly regular occurrence, so this one is soundly lodged in my long-term memory.

As it turns out, she was right. In the world in which we live, noise is ubiquitous and comes in many forms. Stumbling blindly upon silence seems unlikely to happen in the day to day. Seek out silence as a precious rarity and treasure it when it is found. Get rich!
